Two Most Overlooked Areas
Welcome one and all J.A.M Nation. Noise is a common problem among every musician. It does not matter if one plays, runs tech, or sings. This problem will show itself. Some of the first places people check are, having soldered cables instead of solderless, good DC Cables, getting proper surge protectors, power conditioners, better cables like 1/4 in. and XLR, and direct boxes or line isolators. These are all great things but 2 things that often get overlooked are the position of your cables.
Many do not know that cables that carry audio cannot cross cables that carry power. For example when dealing with music, there are cables that strictly carry the signal for the instrument or the voice. The second cable are those that carry strictly electricity to power devices. These two type of cables cannot be touching each other or crossing over each other. To insure a better signal, these must stay in there proper group. Cables, that carry the audio signal, can touch each other and cables, that carry electricity to power devices, can touch each other. However, they must stay in their group. This includes any where in the chain. Many people just think about what is on stage but this includes even in the walls.

So if one is installing a system for the first time, it is important to properly plan the route for the system. Where can it go without crossing certain cables or wires. If a problem arises that there is absolutely no way to achieve this, make one cable going straight up and the other cable going straight across it. This will make the shape of a cross. This is the next best possible choice. While it would be better to not touch at all, this is the next best solution.
So when the stage is being set, please take the time to apply this technique to amps, microphones, pedal boards, and really everything on stage. This has helped me immensely with my equipment and it is a technique that is absolutely FREE. This change is subtle but makes a huge difference in the grand scheme of it all.
