1 Simple Trick For Guitar Amp Live Setup

How to sit better in a mix

Joseph Allen music here with another guitar tip (guit-tip) of the day and, today, we are going to be talking about guitar amps. How can you get a good sound with an amp. Guitar players do not know that they can mess up the mix of the band. Amps can cause feedback and several other things. How can one fix this?

We go to the stage. We set our amp up and plug our guitar in. Turn it on, face it towards the crowd, and we are ready to rock right? 😃 🤘🎸 Wrong, 😑 this is not how many are setting up a guitar amp in the industry today.

You take the amp, turn it away from you and away from the band. The amp has to face away from the audience, and push the sound in the opposite direction. One might be asking, why would you do that? What will that do? This will not cause feedback. Your amp will not bleed into the mics of your singers. The band will hear better and your sound will not be going into the other instruments. You even might be the sound guys best friend.

3 Simple Tips for Amps

As a matter of fact when you flip the amp away from the crowd, it will actually make your guitar sound tighter. How will the audience or congregation hear the sound? You need to mic your amp. Get a microphone and point it directly at the speaker of the amp. It does not need to be dead center. The microphone needs to be just a little off of the speaker. It does not have to be exact. This will make your guitar go into the sound system and make your guitar have a tighter sound for the mix.

Some amps have a direct in. What does this mean? This means, the amp can be plugged directly into the sound system. Also, you can just mic the amp. Just plug in a microphone and put it just one inch away from the screen or speaker of the amp. A great tip is to use your index and middle fingers and this will create approximately one inch of space.

Some microphones that are common to use for amps are the 545 sd microphone or a sure sm57. These are great price microphones and do not allow much sound to be picked up around them. They can only hear what it right in front of the microphone.

Do this and your guitar will sound tighter and sit better in the mix with a band.
