Psalm 71:5-6
“5 For You are my hope, O Lord God;
You are my trust from my youth.
6 By You I have been upheld from birth;
You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb.
My praise shall be continually of You.”
Good Morning, Proverbs 21.17 reveals “He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; he who loves wine and oil will not be rich.”
The focus here is on a sinister sin where people wrap themselves up in luxurious living, where parties (feasts where wine and perfumed oils abound). A woman I knew often stated that many people dig their own grave with their teeth. This speaks to gluttony, where our god is our appetite. It’s a bad, bad place to be. In this case wine and scented perfume oils were very costly and could be as much as 300 days worth of a day laborers pay. This then is the luxury warned against. Basically, when a years salary is spent on luxurious living God takes issue with it as being the reason why wealth is squandered, therfore, lending to the family being impoverished.
Here TRUTH is revealing the absence of moderation in partying. Today, we see a “cruiseship culture” with all the vices for people to have the time of their lives. Look at the modern wedding. The average cost is now $30,000. The Disney deluxe is 15k for a family of four for a week. In our day and time drinks of all kinds (alcohol and sugar filled) coupled with abundance of food are synonymous with the “good-life.” Sporting events celebrate this fanaticism for luxury with food and drink. The Average American consumes 38.87 gallons of soda a year and the population consumes 1.56 billion gallons of per year combined. Liver diseases, like non-alcoholic cirrhosis are now a thing in children as well growing numbers of them are diabetics. Alcoholic beverages are a $256 billion industry. What these things point to is a luxurious life in our culture. As a result these people live it up leaving little for the heirs. Did you know that the growing trend in America is not leaving an inheritance, rather, the more common thing to leave is debt.
We who follow Christ are to come out and be separate. May we all have courage to seek first the kingdom of God.
Grace and peace in Christ
