Is The Lord Our Only Shelter?

For You Alone, O Lord, Make Me Dwell In Safety

Psalm 4 – The Safety of the Faithful

“To the Chief Musician. With stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have relieved me in my distress;
Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.

How long, O you sons of men,
Will you turn my glory to shame?
How long will you love worthlessness
And seek falsehood? Selah
But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself him who is godly;
The Lord will hear when I call to Him.

Be angry, and do not sin.
Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. Selah
Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,
And put your trust in the Lord.

There are many who say,
“Who will show us any good?”
Lord, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.
You have put gladness in my heart,
More than in the season that their grain and wine increased
.
I will both lie down in peace, and sleep;
For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

This is a daily devotional from my Dad, Daniel Allen. It touched me so much I wanted to share it here with you guys.

Good Morning,

As a farmer caring for animals predators are always near. Last evening at sunset making preparations for the night the coyotes were howling. Night time is the most dangerous for our animals. In the picture most will see the perspective of a raccoon at peace in a house. I think differently on the farm. As I said, predators are always on the fringes and hiding right under your nose if possible to prey upon the animals under our care. So, I see a raccoon as a threat in the midst. Peace and rest come to us even though predators are nearby seeking opportunity. We have livestock guardian dogs in the fields who are semi-nocturnal to keep predators away at night so we can rest. Yahweh watches over us and even though the devil walks about seeking whom he may devour we need not fear him.
Psalm 4.1 declares,

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Where are we seeking shelter from the devil and other predators?
verse 2 says,

This I declare about the LORD:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust him.”

Is the LORD our only shelter?
Verse 3 says,

He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”

Do we protect ourselves with His promises? Verse 5-6 speak encouragement commanding us saying,

Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow… in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday.”

There are real predators nearby us just as on the farm. We pen, we coup, place fencing and netting, have dogs, and keep a vigilant eye here. Yahweh and His promises speak peace over us even though enemies abound for He is the Good Shepherd. Psalm 91:19 says,

“If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near…”

Shelter in Him. Jesus is here.
